Earlier this month was the announcement of the new Apple watch and last week the release of Apple’s new flagship device the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Massive lines at stores across Canada with record breaking sales goes to show that people are willing to wait and pay premium just to get the latest and greatest every year from this tech giant.
It seems like every year around this time Apple manages to come up with a new phone model and design that somehow entices and wow’s us -‐ this year being no
exception. Coming in with two new models this year that are bigger than all other previous models the 4.7inch iPhone 6 and 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus are more like fashion and lifestyle statements rather than portable devices. Receiving a record 4 million first-‐day preorders it will now look like customers will have to wait into October before they receive their new phones. As it looks, all of the major carriers will offer the phones either in a multi-‐year subsidized contract price or to be purchased outright without contract.
Installed on these new phones and available for everyone with a compatible device is their most recent operating system IOS version 8. With security and privacy on everyone’s mind after the most recent celebrity photo hacking fiasco, new phones and updated operating systems promise to deliver many security additions and enhancements.
One long awaited feature introduced in IOS8 is the ability to enable Family Sharing. Through Family Sharing, up to six members of a family can share purchases from iTunes, iBooks and the App Store without having to share one account. Purchases are made with the same credit card, and parents can approve spending by their children. So if your child or family member attempts to purchase something on their device you will be notified immediately and have the ability to approve or deny that purchase. Family Sharing addresses a major issue parents have had — and one that has provoked anger when it’s discovered kids have racked up big bills through in-‐app purchases in games.
